Overwhelmed by depression and fear, Ruby seems ready for a breakdown. It’s that secret, which if it comes to light could destroy her family. But if she doesn’t speak out, she may be in danger. What is Ruby to do? Writer Crystal L. Bass keeps the reader guessing as she uses side-splitting humor, ear for dialogue, love for working-class characters and heart-felt pathos to deftly move us through the story of the teenager who is caught in a quagmire. Set in late-1980s Baltimore, Maryland, Bass skillfully pulls us into the story of Ruby Bowers, who is one of what her mother, Diane, calls her four precious gems. But Diane has never truly shown how precious they are, so it is no wonder that each is battling their own inner demons. Dark clouds seem to permanently hover over the dysfunctional family, as they crazily yet lovingly struggle through enough family drama to last two lifetimes.

Wow, It’s so refreshing to read an urban fiction book that deviates from the stereotypical urban story peddled by authors that simply repeating the same story line with different character names. Young girl meets hustler and now he boss, he loves her, she loves him, he cheats, she cheats, they separate, the kids keep coming, baby mama drama and on an on it goes. I love the fact that the story is well thought out .Ruby’s story and character arc really develops over the course of the book and you cannot help but root for her overcome the personal and societal obstacles she’s facing . Ofcourse, her siblings also add a lot of color to the story . And then comes Price & Ruby romance. I enjoyed the relationship between the two and felt they truly balanced each other out. All in all it great book and i’m already halfway into the sequel.

Dark Clouds A Charm City Family Struggle edition by Crystal L Bass Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I didn't know what to expect about this novel. It had been recommended by a former professor, but once I opened it, the characters drew me in, and what was so wierd was that even though the issues Bass writes about are serious, the characters were hilarious! I know the back of the book warned me of how humorous it would be, but some of the dialogue just catches you off guard. Great job Crystal. You write a wonderful novel about characters whose stories need to be told. Congratulations and don't leave us waiting too long for the sequel.
Although this novel is a well-adapted story of poor living in Baltimore, there were some inconsistencies that made it difficult to read at times. Ruby's dialogue changes from the typically phonetic and cliche ebonics speech (which is consistently well-done with her mother Diane) to an over-the-top prophetic demeanor at random events. I think this is done to reinforce her image of being the standout character, but I thought it was desperately over done in that sense. The reason I say this is because her setting and environment are described and detailed so much and so well, that this type of transition of speech seems a bit unrealistic in my eyes (and ears).

It is no doubt a good look into the lives of a family in a unique situation ("the only black family in a 3-4 mile radius"), and how hectic life can be in such a poverty-stricken neighborhood. I also came across too many passages that were described too cliched ("her face was smooth as a baby's bottom," "if he said jump, she wanted to know how high," "the tension was so thick it could be cut with a big butcher knife"), and Diane treating Robert (one of her many men in her lifetime) like "the king of the hill" gets redundant and annoying after a bit.

I have to say though, the passage concerning Tee-Tee's forced abortion from Diane was as real as it gets. Making her eat grits laced with pills to cause a miscarriage spoke volumes of how backwards of a character she is, along with basically forcing her to fall down steep steps. Things like that definitely provided a good amount of depth and overall character to the story. I found great aspects of the novel, but I think its faults take precedence.
There is so much to say about Dark Clouds A Charm City Family's Struggle. I had my doubts when I came across grammatical and stylistic errors but Crystal Bass won me over with such an incredible depiction of how challenging life can be for a Black family in inner-city Baltimore. She goes to great lengths to make the book as authentic as possible and as she has stated in interviews even though the book is fiction, many of the events are based on true events. Many of the characters actually use slang when they talk. The characters are so vivid. Each character Ruby, Diane, Pearl, Turquoise, Dan, Price - is so vibrant and convincing.

She makes a lot of references to restaurants, landmarks, and events. Having spent a lot of time in the Baltimore area, i felt as though the references made the story so authentic for me. The issues are real issues that people in Baltimore face today. Through all of these parts - characters, setting, issues, the story really comes to life. But my favorite thing about this book is that its not just a story, it opens our eyes to a culture that does have serious problems, but at the same time has much beauty. The tale unfolds in such a suspenseful way. No subject is taboo, she bears all for the reader to see.

The strength that Bass portrayed through the protagonist, Ruby, was inspiring and if you read the book to the very end you too will be inspired because even through the most challenging and tragic experiences that life throws at us, if you have the right attitude you can overcome anything. There was a certain togetherness that Ruby and Pearl shared that helped them get through the worst. Crystal Bass is a talented writer and I am excited to read her second book.
I really didn't know what to expect from the book.

The title caught my attention. So I said let me see if there anything good that will come out of living in Charm City B-More. I also wanted to find out what the struggle was. I lived in Charm City all my life and it was nice to know someone liked B-More enough to write about it.( smile) This novel started off holding my interest. I wanted to find out just who this little girl was. She was funny but real. As I read on I started to think about the side of Baltimore where I grow up. Even through I knew the novel was fiction, it seemed like I knew someone just like the characters in the book. The book really made you want to say hey I would have said that, or I would have told that and so on. The night I received the book I looked on the back first ( don't we all). But once I read the first chapter their was no turning back! I sit in my dinning room chair and read it from beginning to end. Wow it was Great! I can hardly wait for the sequel.
I related to the story.
